Howdy. Well to be honest I've been doing this whole mashup thing for 2+ years now. I think alot of my musical tastes and what not are the things have guided me to the mashup community. I got started like two years ago. Up until then I had tastes in music that had literally changed by the year (or even month). As with a lot of kids, I started out with the oldies growing up because that's what my dad listened to. Then I got into the whole rock thing for a while (with shifts from alternative to classic to punk and a whole lot of others). Then my rednec/central Indiana/living on a farm lifestyle finally got to me and I fell in love with country. Finally, about 2 or 3 years ago, I got into the hip hop and more modern music scene. The thing is that when I gained interest in a new genre, I never lost any in the other ones. So I wanted to find a good mixture of some of them combined into one. Easier said then done. So long story short, I found a few mashups I really liked and eventually decided that I would just have to make my own since the music I wanted to hear didn't exist.
Also my musical background consists of playing percussion in my high school band, playing the drum set with two different bands as well as drum set lessons for 3 years. I've had keyboard and general music theory lessons and have been in a few piano, snare, and drum set recitals. But what I really fell in love with was DJ'ing which I've been doing for about 5 years now. So I when I started mashing, I already had a good understanding of couting beats, and beat matching (vital part of DJ'ing), as well as harmonics which helps tremendously because matching keys is a vital part of mash-ups IMO.
I kind of was a loner in the mashup scene up until now. I never tried any tutorials or guidance of any form for mashing, I just kind of used what I knew to make my own methods up. I don't have any of my newer stuff hosted anywhere (but now I'm inspired to do so!), but here are some examples of some of my old work probably ~4 or 5 months old.
Soundcloud Streaming Music Page (some mashups and some original remixes) (Only the registered members can see the link)
Some of my Youtube Vids (Only the registered members can see the link)
*I'm not going to claim to be any good at the video half of mashups :p
